Madoff Madness

madoffOh Bernie. I can’t hate on you. (Yes I can). You single handedly pulled off one of the world’s most ballsy crimes. You then got caught, not because it was your fault exactly, but because of a failure in other areas of our economic system. And then, to top it off, other would-be-Madoff’s all got jammed up to boot! I applaud you for your cajones. When you all end up in Prison together, I imagine you will have fun with your gang of imitators.

What really irks me however, is the fact that you are free to live the lavish life after you’ve been caught. In a report from CNN, Cohmad Securities, a firm that has deep ties to Bernie’s NY-based firm, was aware of approximately $15.5 million in withdrawals by Bernie’s wife Ruth. The kicker: $10 million was withdrawn the day before he was arrested, the other $5.5 million not even a month before. For the investors who lost everything, this must be infuriating! If I was so distraught at the loss of all my money, to the point where I was ready to off myself, I’d make apit stop first. Once again, the U.S. Justice system has failed to do its job, stating that because Madoff isn’t a flight risk, nor a danger to the community, he is allowed to be out on bail.

Question: How is a man who is most assuredly going to Prison NOT a flight risk? If I had $15.5 million, I could get out of the country and never be heard from again. Bangkok anyone? And just because Bernie isn’t a killer doesn’t mean his presence in the public isn’t a threat. People have died because of his crimes. Might as well have given him the gun. This just goes to show that if you are rich and powerful (being white helps too), there are limits that the law is willing to go on imposing punishment. Bernie stole $50 BILLION from investors and lost nearly all of it. That is one way of defining someone who is a danger to the community (he might not shoot you in the kneecap, but he definitely will jack your wallet).

For his audacity, Bernie gets rewarded with leniency. This can’t be justice, can it? Thoughts?
